The Milan Design Week is here. With thousands of individual events, exhibitions, launches and presentations packed into less than a week, each year Milan Design Week delivers an unrivalled opportunity to notice the absolute latest in design from around the world. The city becomes a single, large group event dedicated to the best of design and creativity: presentations, exclusive parties, installations, exhibits, and Fuorisalone openings bring the city to life. The districts where the events take place are invaded by visitors, from Brera to Tortona, Lambrate, San Babila, the ’5 Vie’, plus more dedicated projects where the majority of happenings are concentrated. In addition to exploring “Salone del Mobile”, we took to the streets, checking out the huge offering of shows and installations spread across the city.
Visions of the future at “Salone del Mobile Milano”
Design Week, Salone del Mobile and Fuorisalone: Milan is not only the city of fashion, but also design. During this special week-long event, we are visiting the “Salone del Mobile Milano”, a showcase that has always mixed business with culture, shaping the history of design and furnishing yesterday, today and tomorrow. This year’s edition is composed by: International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition; the Euroluce exhibition continues to host the new frontieres of lighting spaces and be the global benchmark for the industry; Workplace 3.0, an innovative exhibition area devoted to design and technology in workspace planning, that confirms its new vocation as an exploration of brand-new approaches, forms and solutions to the workplace “of the future”, in which the human factor and smart technologies have a vital role to play. Finally, the Rho exhibition center also hosts SaloneSatellite, the first event to focus on young designers, instantly becoming the unrivalled place for interface with manufacturers, talent scouts and the most promising young designers.
The districts where the other events take place
Besides the most well-established districts, the 2017 edition of Fuorisalone houses the newly born Isola Design District, a new hub for creativity right under the shade of the Milanese skyscrapers and the Bosco Verticale. The Tortona Design District plays its trump cards: Base Milano hosts exhibitions and projects dedicated to the theme of nomadic living, with portable, floating houses, user-friendly objects and itinerant structures. Colour, in the ‘Time to Color’ project, is the theme of the Superdesign Show. The theme of the Brera Design District, dedicated to gamification design, is inspired by a quotation by Bruno Munari “Designing is a game and playing is design”, to remind visitors that playing is a serious business at all ages, and it is important to have fun when designing. The post-industrial district of Ventura Lambrate, where creativity is less conventional and more surreal, is splitted into two with the inauguration, this year, of a space located in the underground tunnels of the Central Railway Station. Another of the centre’s key districts, the ‘5 vie’, from Garage Sanremo to piazza Gorani, houses an exhibition project featuring the latest works by important European designers.
