Sustainable Packaging
The American Forest & Paper Association has just provided new guidelines to help designers conceive packaging as recyclable as possible.
We have been working for years studying our product packaging so that they are easily recyclable, therefore promoting eco-sustainability and environmental protection. Ensuring the environmental compatibility of packaging and the sustainability of its components throughout their life cycle is a winning strategy in terms of both business and social responsibility.
Eco-sustainability as a corporate value
Sustainability for companies has transformed from a communication element to a corporate value that determines a competitive advantage. Consumers are increasingly attentive to the company offer as a whole and eco-sustainability has now become a constant element of choice.
Sustainability is therefore not only a good internal practice, but certainly a symbol of ethics and corporate responsibility that increases the good reputation of the Brand and a loyalty factor.
In our creative and design development path we always follow some basic principles to promote the ‘green soul’ of packaging.
1. Form and structure
Simple but effective. We design our packaging with an essential design that optimizes the shapes, dimensions, volumes and overall weight to the maximum. By doing so we try to avoid not only the waste of materials but we try to reduce shipping and transport costs that affect the total cost of the product.
The structure of the packaging is furthermore designed to effectively protect its content, to optimize the pallet footprint and to exceed the highest quality standards.
Reducing or even removing packaging from products, for example from bulk foods, is a way to minimize the materials in circulation and ultimately the environmental impact of packaging and to save unnecessary costs.
2. Materials
We design with the aim of limiting the use of plastic, up to its definitive elimination, to favor other more sustainable materials such as corrugated cardboard or corrugated paper.
Corrugated cardboard is 100% recyclable, biodegradable and reusable and for this reason it is one of the most chosen green materials for an eco-sustainable packaging.
The advantage of using biodegradable materials is that they degrade in nature (rapid biodegradability), so their disposal is easier. From corn starch to mushrooms, even the most unexpected materials can be used as eco-friendly packaging materials.
3. Consumer communication and education
We select materials and design graphics that communicate attention to the environment and the green soul of the products in a clear and direct way. The key to the success of packaging recycling also lies in involving the consumer to make him feel part of the change. Brands that communicate their eco-sustainability and educate their customers on how to use and dispose of packaging responsibly are also strategic in the transition to a circular economy.
